Prof. Dr. hc mult. Reinhold Wurth,
Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Wurth Group Foundations
Established in 1945 in Kunzeslau, Germany, the Wurth Group today is a world market leader in its core business; the sale of assembly and fastening materials. It currently consists of over 400 companies in more than 80 countries and has approximately 80,000 employees on its payroll. Approximately 34,000 of these are permanently employed sales representatives.
In the core business, the Wurth Line, the product range for craft and industry comprises over 125,000 products: from screws, screw accessories and anchors to tools, chemical-technical products and personal protection equipment. The Allied Companies of the Wurth Group, which either operate in business areas adjacent to the core business or in diversified business areas, round off the range by offering products for DIY stores, material for electrical installations, electronic components (e.g. circuit boards) as well as financial services.
The history of the Wurth Group is inextricably linked with the entrepreneur Prof. Dr. hc mult. Reinhold Wurth, today Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Wurth Group. The development of the family business, which today has over 400 companies in 80 countries, is an exemplary success story in the international business landscape: in 1945, the parent company of the group, Adolf Wurth GmbH & Co. KG, was founded in Germany by Adolf Wurth. In 1949, at the age of 14, Reinhold Wurth began a commercial apprenticeship in his father's screw wholesale business. After his father's early death in 1954, the then 19-year-old took over the company. Starting from the post-war reconstruction years in Germany, he developed the two-man business into a global trading group.
The Wurth Group consists of 4 levels of Boards within the organizational structure.
1. Supervisory Board
The Wurth Group is a family-owned business. As early as 1987, the company assets were transferred to various family trusts. The Supervisory Board is comparable to the supervisory body of a German listed company.
2. Advisory Board
The Advisory Board is the supreme supervisory entity within the Wurth Group. In addition to advising on strategic matters, it is responsible for approving corporate planning and the use of funds, and appoints the members of the Central Managing Board and the managing directors of the major companies.
3. Central Managing Board
The Central Managing Board - comparable to a board managing a group holding company - is the top-level decision-making body of the Wurth Group. Its most important tasks include strategic planning, the appointment of executive personnel, and the operative management of strategic business units and functional areas.
4. Executive Board
The Executive Board forms the operative management level of the Group within the framework of the guidelines specified by the Central Managing Board. This 2nd management level consists of the Executive Vice Presidents (EVPs) and the Senior Vice Presidents (SVPs) who report directly to a member of the Central Managing Board. It is not the tasks or the operative responsibility that sets the Executive Vice Presidents and the Senior Vice Presidents apart. Essentially, the Senior Vice Presidents have the same reporting duties and rights to information as the Executive Vice Presidents. The principal distinguishing feature is the lower span of control (sales volume and/or companies/countries they are responsible for).
